17U Boys Provincial Cup Trillium A

The 17U Boys Red worked very hard leading up to this tournament.. With two new coaches and four new players the team meshing well.

It was a tournaments of ups and downs all day. The team was ranked 5th going into the tournament. They finished second in their pool with victory over the Pakmen (25-18 25-23), a split with Forest City Green (22-25 25-22) and a loss to Barrie (16-25 23-25). They faced a strong team in the Etobicoke Wildcats in the quarters and lost 15-25 and 22-25. The Stratford Cobras were next. It was a great 3 set battle, but they came up short 12-15 in the third, resulting in a seventh place finish for the tournament.

Coach Hudson and Govan are very pleased with the work ethic of all the boys!

17U Boys Red McGregor Cup Championship West January 23rd, 2010

The team was ranked 3rd in Pool A for this tournament.

They came up against the Stratford Cobras first. The team got off to a slow start getting down by as many as 7 points in the first set. Through some strong serving and hitting they mounted a comeback only to fall 22-25. They boys used the momentum from the first set to complete a comeback to take the next two sets 25-22 and 25-20. Now it was time for the #1 ranked Riverside Rage. With no time to rest they once again took some time to get going, but once they did, there was no stopping them.  Great blocking, hitting, serving and team play brought them to victory in 3 sets 18-25, 25-18 and 25-19.

This result put them first in pool A.

The boys faced a 4 hour wait for the semis. The opponents were the Niagara Rapids. As always it was a great battle between the two rivals. A very close three set match resulted. Unfortunately the boys came out on the short end losing 26-24, 24-26 and 9-15.

Now for the bronze medal match vs the Element. So many close matches and the long wait time for the playoffs took its toll on the entire team. They fell short of a bronze losing 14-25 and 19-25.

Overall the team had a great tournament and will definitely use their success to push harder the next tournament.

17U Boys Challenge Cup Championship Feb. 13, 2010

There were a lot of teams in this tournament that we have never played before. The OVA combined the east and west together for the first time this season. The team was ranked 9th overall and placed in Pool A with the #1 Ottawa Fusion and the #8 Kingston Pegasus. We were in tough with Ottawa in our first match of the day. The first game  saw strong team play and serving. It was back and forth until the end, 22-25. Eventually the boys lost in 2 sets. Then icame the Pegasus! With a slow start after the challenging match with Ottawa we took the first set 26-24. We also took the second with great blocking and digging, 25-19. This placed us 2nd in our pool.

The playoffs started out with a strong match against MAC, won 25-17 and 25-19. This put us in the quarter finals against the #2 team of the tournament, the Aurora Storm Thunder. Even though we lost in 2 straight the boys created a lot of frustration for the Storm and hung in with them to the end.

Then came the 3 hour wait for the 5th place game. We faced the Element from Toronto. The match went 3 sets in a see saw battle. In the end the wait hurt and we lost 22-25, 25-22 and 9-15 to finish tied for 7th.
